Is My Back Pain Related To Weak Muscles Or A More Serious Problem ?
Most back pain is due to degeneration of the spine
caused by aging and back mismanagement.
Low back pain can happen because your ligaments and muscles are weak
or worn out from repeated work.
A strain of the muscle can occur when the muscle is poorly conditioned or overworked.
A sprain of the low back can occur with a sudden, forceful movement.
Discs can then become weakened and lead to a slipped disc or
bulging disc caused by heavy lifting or a sudden fall.
How does the spine work?
The lower or lumbar spine is a complex structure
which connects your upper body (including your chest and arms)
to your lower body (including your pelvis and legs).
The mobility of your spine allows movements
such as turning, twisting or bending;
and the strength allows you to stand, walk and lift.
Proper functioning of your lower back is needed for almost all activities of daily living.
How can I prevent low back pain and avoid surgery?
Most back related injuries will not require surgery.
Back pain related to muscle or ligament strain will normally heal within a short amount of time.
Maintaining good physical shape, good posture,
healthy weight is vital to decreasing lower back pain.
Staying active and using an inflammatory drug
can help you deal with temporary back pain.
Chronic back pain might require a strength training program
and chronic pain treatment.
What Causes Back Pain
?
Two common causes of back pain are disc injury and degenerative disc disease.
As discs degenerate, they lose their water content and height, bringing vertebrae closer together.
The nerve openings are consequently narrowed and
the added pressure from the disc can pinch a nerve
causing back or leg pain.
A ruptured disc is an injured or damaged disc that leaks out watery jelly
(called nucleus pulposus) from the centre of the disc.
This leakage reduces the shock absorber effect and
sometimes the jelly presses against a nerve and causes pain, primarily leg pain.
Consultation is essential for this type of condition.
